She Believes
“Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” – Luke 1:45
We live in such a skeptical world. People seem to think it is noble to be skeptical of God, skeptical of people and to just simply “not believe”. The problem is that people were created to believe in something. We were created to have faith!
One of my favorite movies of all time is the Miracle on 34th Street that was made in 1994. I love the whole movie for so many reasons. I know the premise may be silly. There is a man who says that he is Santa Claus and there are those who want to put him in the loony bin. But, then…. A community gets behind him. And all kinds of people start deciding to believe. Bad people, cranky people, rough people, and good people too. All over the city of New York, there are banners and signs and posters and pins that say, “We believe!” And my heart beats fast and I want to dance and sing!
I BELIEVE!!
C.S. Lewis said, “…if you shut the door on faith entirely, you also close yourself off to joy, beauty, and connection”.
God has given us all kinds of promises in His Word. And I never want it said of me that I didn’t believe. Matthew 13:58 makes me shudder. “And he did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.”
This my friends is about Jesus himself. I refuse to be skeptical of my God. I refuse to be skeptical of the goodness of people. Oh, I’m not saying that everybody is good. There is evil in this world and there is an enemy, but I know that the bible tells us Greater is He who is in us than He who is in the world! I BELIEVE GOD!!
So, in the movie I mentioned above, just the very act of believing gets me excited. But, let me tell you. On a much grander scale, I believe in the goodness of God. I believe His Word. And I love being surrounded by a friend or two or more who believe with me.
In Luke 1:34-45, these eleven verses are so rich and full of amazing points. First of all, Mary who has been told that she will birth to the savior of the world asks how that can happen since she is a virgin. The angel tells her that the Holy Spirit will come on her and the power of the Most High will overshadow her and she will give birth to the son of God. The angel then says that Elizabeth, her cousin, is going to have a child in her old age. The angel says, “She who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.”
And Mary believes. She just says that she is the Lord’s servant and may his word to her be fulfilled. Then…..she got ready and hurried to the home of Elizabeth her cousin. (Read it. She got ready and hurried!)
Have you ever gotten ready and hurried to see your friend? Have you ever felt so touched by God that you just had to see the woman that you know who has also been touched by God? And Elizabeth is so excited to see Mary. She recognizes that God has done an amazing thing. Before Mary tells her anything, Elizabeth knows.
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
Oh how good it is to communicate with other Godly women who believe. I want to wear a banner, a pin, a sign – that tells the world that I believe! So, I do!
